This town of 18,600 overlooking Long Island Sound is so New England picturesque that former president Bill Clinton singled it out in his memoir, My Life, as an “especially old and beautiful” favorite during his time at Yale.
Madison was first settled in 1641. Throughout the 18th century, Madison was known as East Guilford until it was incorporated as a town in 1826. The present name is after James Madison, 4th President of the United States.
James Madison (1751-1836) was a founding father of the United States and the fourth American president, serving in office from 1809 to 1817. An advocate for a strong federal government, the Virginia-born Madison composed the first drafts of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights and earned the nickname “Father of the Constitution.” In 1792, Madison and Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) founded the Democratic-Republican Party, which has been called America’s first opposition political party. When Jefferson became the third U.S. president, Madison served as his secretary of state. In this role, he oversaw the Louisiana Purchase from the French in 1803.
Most historians agree with the French foreign minister at the time noted that in keeping with Madison’s tendency to avoid the spotlight, Madison “governed the President” in foreign affairs. Rather than suggesting a weak President, Madison’s domination of foreign policy actually rested upon the President’s confidence in Madison and their mutual agreement on all matters of diplomacy. By 1808, the man behind-the-scenes stood poised to succeed Jefferson as the fourth President of the United States.
During his presidency, Madison led the U.S. into the controversial War of 1812 (1812-15) against Great Britain, which was also known as “Mr. Madison’s War.” After two terms in the White House, Madison retired to his Virginia plantation, Montpelier, with his wife Dolley.
Madison’s tendency to remain behind the scenes makes it a fitting namesake for the town of Madison. At a mere 36 square miles along the Connecticut shoreline, Madison is easy to miss—and residents happen to like it that way!
